GM Institute Host to Many
Increase in Registrations Is Reported After Open House
Approximately 1,600 spare-time students, members of their families and friends of the Genearl Motors Institute attended an open house held by the institute Friday night. One hundred new registrations for spare-time courses were received during the evening, bringing the total enrollment to more than 1,000 who have completed arrangements and received schedules for the start of the winter term.
The visitors were taken on a tour of the building, with members of the faculty as guides. Of particular interest were the machine shop, hydraulics laboratory, welding shop, automotive service, science laboratories and drawing rooms, where training of immediate application to the war effort was in progress. Considerable interest was also attached to the business and other instruction departments, and to the area devoted to student activities.
Regular classes were conducted during the evening with 600 students in attendance. However, spare-time classes were not in session as this program does not open until Monday.
In addition to those who have completed arrangements for classes, a large number of students will meet next week to settle final details. All of the students who have registered for business courses, but who have not been assigned to classes, will meet at the institute Wednesday at 7 p. m. for organization of classes.
Those who are enrolled for shop courses on a provisional basis also will report for organization of night classes on Wednesday at 7 p. m. and members of morning shop classes will meet Saturday at 9 a. m. for completion of organization.
Students enrolled in science, English, mathematics, letter writing, psychology and economics, but who have not been assigned to classes, will meet Thursday at 7 p. m. Engaged to Bay Cityan
The engagement of Miss Ruth Diers, (above) to Lieut. Norman A. E. quast, Army Air Forces, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Schutt,of ketchum street, is announced today by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Diers, of Cincinnati, O. No date has been set for the wedding. Lieut. Quast, who is on terminal leave, is attending General Motores institute of Technology at Flint. He served 13 months in the European Theatre of Operations and was a prisoner of war for nine and one-half months. - Bay City Times
Saturday Nuptials in Madisonville
In a candlelight ceremony at the St. Paul Luthern Church last Saturday, Miss Ruth Clara Diers, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Geroge A. Diers, of Maphet avenue, became the bride of Mr. Norman A. E. Quast, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Schutt, of Bay City, Mich. Rev. Walter Littman perfored the ceremony at seven-thirty o'clock before an altar decked with white chrysanthemums and white gladioli.
Miss Florence Diers, sister of the bride, was a bridesmaid. She wore a gown of pastel green net. Miss Maxine Quast, sister of the groom, another bridesmaid, was gowned in yellow net. Both carried bouquets of yellow and burnt orange chrysanthemums.
Mr. Lewis Mead, of Bay City, Mich., was the groom's best man. Mr. John Moerlein, cousin of the bride, was his groomsman. Messrs. Robert Schutt and Charles Diers served as ushers.
Entering on the arm of her father, the bride was beautiful in a trained Elizabethan gown of white satin, with duchess lace and a pearl coronet, from which fell her fingertip bridal veil. Her pearls were a gift of the groom. She carried a bouquet of white chrysanthemums.
The mother of the bride chose a turquoise blue crepe dress, and wore a corsage of yellow chrysanthemums. The groom's mother chose a sheer black dress and wore a similar corsage.
Following the wedding, a reception for friends and relatives was held at the Hotel Alms, after which the young couple left on a trip to Michigan, to last until September 16, when the groom plans to enter the University of Michigan to study engineering.
Until Mr. Quast's education is completed, the couple will reside in Ann Arbor, but upon its completion they will thake up residence in Bay City.
The bride chose for her going-away costume a blue-grey gabardine suit with black accessories. She wore an orchid, a gift of the groom.
Out-of-town guests at the function were Mr. and Mrs. Otto Yakel, of Detroit, Mich., Mr. Robert Muir, of Bay City, and Mr. and Mrs. William Verity and their daughter, Lois, of Bay City.
Mrs. Quast is a graduate of Withrow High School. Mr. Quast served as a first lieutenant in the Army Air Corps. After being shot down over Germany, he was held as a prisoner of war near Barth, Germany for eleven months. He holds the Purple Heart in addition to other decorations. - Cincinnati Enquirer
